When I faced off with New Age “guru” Deepak Chopra a few years ago for a national TV debate on Lee Strobel’s “Faith Under Fire,” I had a very specific strategy in mind to even the scales.
I knew it would be a mistake to pit my credibility against Chopra’s. He was world famous. I was the local boy from L.A. In a “Chopra vs. Koukl” matchup, I was outgunned.
There was someone else on my side, though, who had a lot more firepower than either of us: Jesus of Nazareth. If I could position the debate as Chopra vs. Jesus, I knew I would fare much better in the eyes of the viewing public, because Jesus has tremendous credibility with virtually everybody.
My approach worked well with Chopra. It’s also a sound strategy in assessing any worldview, especially new religious fads that claim to be consistent with Christianity.
