After Manchester United and Chelsea were paired together in the draw for the quarter-finals of the 2011 Champions League Telegraph Sport picks out six of the best meetings between the two clubs since Roman Abramovich came to Stamford Bridge.

A new era begins at Stamford Bridge where Jose Mourinho takes charge of his first match against Manchester United as Chelsea manager.

A season that ended with Chelsea winning their first league title in half a century began with this confidence-lifting, if narrow, victory, courtesy of a goal from Eidur Gudjohnsen’s goal. United could only finish third that season, some 18 points behind the champions.

The night in Moscow when John Terry became beloved of all Manchester United fans for the summer. Cristiano Ronaldo headed United in front before Frank Lampard drew Chelsea level in the rain and frenetic heat of a fantastic Champions League final.

In extra-time Lampard struck a post and Giggs looked to have settled it, before Terry blocked his effort, taking the game to penalties.

Terry had the chance to win the shoot-out but slipped on the Luzhniki Stadium turf before Edwin Van der Sar saved from Nicolas Anelka to hand United their third European crown.

The spluttering death rattle of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s final matches in charge of Chelsea as United outclassed their rivals with goals from Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov.
