The second semi-final of Britain’s Got Talent saw another two musical acts voted through. At this rate, Saturday’s final will resemble a motley edition of The X Factor rather than a variety show.

Comfortable winners tonight were junior boyband New Bounce. Like New Edition meets JLS, they were immensely likeable with great stage presence considering they’re aged between 12 and 16. Show boss Simon Cowell said he could envisage “success in the real world”. Translation: “even more money for me”.

Joining them in the final will be boogie-woogie organist Jean Martyn. The larger-than-life Midlander seemed a hit in the studio, but with her range of wacky winks and sequined jackets, too much like a Victoria Wood or Peter Kay character to take seriously. She also has a reasonably successful keyboard-playing career already, which hardly seems in the spirit of a talent discovery show.

Mundanely-named conjuring duo David & Karen almost “broke the curse of magic on Britain’s Got Talent”, as Amanda Holden put it, but just missed out. Knockabout dancers Two And A Half Men can also consider themselves unlucky.

The night’s other musical act was charming enough but, like Martyn, a pub turn with ideas above his station. Cow-eyed Irish crooner Irish pensioner Herbie Armstrong got roundly patronised as “cute” but dismissed by Cowell as “a singing bloodhound”.

Willy Wonka-ish circus-dance troupe Enchanted also failed to enchant Cowell. Viewers were awaiting the moment when the returning boss would tell the other judges “I don’t know what you were thinking putting this act through” and he finally did. But not until we’d enjoyed the incongruous sight of him reasoning with a fancy-dressed ringmaster in a giant purple top hat.

He then said it again about Riverdance-with-a-twist duo Up & Over It, who he dismissed as boring. Like the cyclist and martial artist last night, their act was impressively skilled but that didn’t make it terribly entertaining.

Two cynical turns took the gloss off an entertaining show, however. First, Britney Spears tribute act Lorna Bliss, who’d received three “no” votes in the audition stages, was randomly given a reprieve. It was a shameless bid to sex up the semi-finals and made a mockery of the previous round. Shoddy.

We also could’ve done without judge Amanda Holden getting on-stage to belt out a stage-schooly number from Shrek: The Musical. Tawdry plugging at which Ofcom could well raise an eyebrow.

Still, the semi-finals continue tomorrow. Will a non-musical act make it through?

Hard Nut

In moving this sofa out of the top window to the street, the man on the ladder thought it easiest to control its descent by balancing it on his head. Unfortunately it fell off to the left, and was suspended for some time by the rope. At one point it seemed determined to become part of the shop's window display by the direct route, but the lads got it down safely in the end to a round of applause from the small crowd that had gathered, hoping for a disaster.

Jack Warner and Mohamed Bin Hammam to be accused of offering $40,000 bribes to national associations

Jack Warner and Mohamed Bin Hammam to be accused of offering $40,000 bribes to national associations

Fifa presidential challenger Mohamed Bin Hammam and controversial powerbroker Jack Warner will be accused of offering $40,000 cash bribes to national football associations when they appear before a Fifa ethics committee hearing on Sunday, Telegraph Sport can disclose.

The sensational allegations are contained in a report compiled by Fifa executive committee member Chuck Blazer that has thrown the presidential election into chaos just a week before the vote, and deepened the corruption crisis engulfing the world governing body.

Fifa opened disciplinary proceedings against Bin Hammam and Warner on Wednesday, and they have been summoned to appear before an ethics committee hearing on Sunday, just four days before the scheduled vote. Two officials from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) also face disciplinary charges.

The cash offers are alleged to have been made at a specially convened meeting of the CFU on May 10-11 in Trinidad, Warner’s home country. The meeting was arranged by Warner and Bin Hammam to allow the Qatari to address members of the CFU as part of his presidential campaign.

It is understood that Blazer’s report alleges that Warner, on behalf of Bin Hammam, offered members of the Caribbean Football Union $40,000 (£25,000) in cash as a “gifts” and “development projects” , and that it was implied that the money was in return for votes in the presidential election.

It is alleged that the approaches were made in private meetings with Warner and that all 25 members of the CFU with a vote in the presidential election may have been approached.

The report was prepared on Blazer’s behalf by John Collins, a former federal prosecutor and partner in the Chicago legal firm Collins and Collins, after he was approached by CFU members outraged at the approaches.

“I conducted the investigation,” Collins, a member of Fifa’s legal committee, told Telegraph Sport. “I interviewed a number of parties and collated a number of documents including sworn affidavits. I then passed the report to Fifa on Mr Blazer’s behalf.”

A number of those approached by Warner are understood to have been interviewed by Collins as part of his investigation.

The CFU meeting was arranged after Bin Hammam was unable to attend the annual congress in Miami of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) of which Warner is president. Bin Hammam was denied entry to the United States because of problems with his visa.

Warner has long been considered the king-maker in presidential elections with his control of the 38 Concacaf votes the key to either candidate’s success. The charges against Bin Hammam, a Qatari, and Warner come with Fifa already facing corruption allegations arising from the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process.

The CFU has 30 members, 25 of whom have a vote in the presidential election.

As well as testimony from Blazer, Telegraph Sport understands that the allegations are supported by signed affidavits from several witnesses.

Bribery is explicitly forbidden under Fifa’s code of ethics and both Bin Hammam and Warner can expect a lengthy ban if found guilty of the charges.

Both denied any wrongdoing last night and suggested that that the charges were motivated by Sepp Blatter’s desire to win a fourth term in office.

“If there is even the slightest justice in the world, these allegations will vanish in the wind,” Bin Hammam said. “This move is little more than a tactic being used by those who have no confidence in their own ability to emerge successfully from the FIifa presidential election.

Warner was just as dismissive. “I completely deny any allegations of wrongdoing either intentionally or unknowingly while I was in the Caribbean,” he told Telegraph Sport. “I am unaware of the particulars of the matter being investigated by Fifa at this time, so I will therefore abstain from any comment until such time as I have been made aware of all that has been submitted to Fifa.

“What I can say at this time is that I am not aware of any wrongdoing on my part and I shall listen to allegations made and respond accordingly. It is interesting to note the timing of these allegations and the hearing scheduled days before the Fifa presidential elections.”

In a statement Fifa confirmed that Secretary General Jérôme Valcke had received a report alleging possible violations of the Fifa Code of Ethics, including bribery allegations, and that a hearing would be held in Zurich on Sunday.

The statement read: “On 24 May, 2011, Fifa executive committee member and CONCACAF general secretary Chuck Blazer reported to Fifa secretary general Jérôme Valcke possible violations of the Fifa code of ethics allegedly committed by officials.

“In particular, the report referred to a special meeting of the Caribbean Football Union, apparently organised jointly by Fifa Vice-President Jack A Warner and Fifa Executive Committee member Mohamed bin Hammam, which took place on May 10 and 11 2011. This meeting was linked to the upcoming Fifa presidential election.

“Subsequently, the Fifa Ethics Committee today opened a procedure against the following officials: Fifa Vice-President Jack A Warner; Fifa Executive Committee member Mohamed bin Hammam; CFU official Debbie Minguell; CFU official Jason Sylvester.” The ethics committee hearing will be heard by its deputy chairman Petrus Damaseb, of Namibia, after chairman Claudio Sulser declined to participate because, like Blatter, he is Swiss.

Fifa is already examining corruption allegations levelled against six executive committee members in Parliament earlier this month, including bribery claims levelled at the Qatar 2022 World Cup bid.

A whistleblower scheduled to give evidence to Fifa this week has pulled out of legal advice, and the Football Association is due to deliver a file on Lord Triesman’s allegations against executive committee members to Fifa on Friday.

The agent of Alberto Aquilani believes his client's future will be decided next week.

By Telegraph staff and agencies 10:32AM BST 25 May 2011

The Italian midfielder spent the past season on loan at Juventus from Liverpool after Roy Hodgson, the former manager at Anfield, thought the 26 year-old surplus to requirement.

Juventus had been expected to hand Aquilani a permanent contract. However, the Turin side failed to exercise their first buy-out option to sign the player, which expired last weekend.

"The percentage that Aquilani will remain at Juve is above 50 per cent," Aquilani's agent Franco Zavaglia told Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian daily newspaper.

"He has three years left on his contract with Liverpool. I believe that in a couple of days the two clubs will reach an agreement."

Juventus, who have failed to qualify for European football next season after finishing seventh in Serie A, had refused to pay the asking price of £16 million demanded by Liverpool for the player's permanent signature.

However, Zavaglia is confident an agreement will be reached.

"Juve should have paid £16m for the buy-out clause but I don't think there will be any problems regarding the financial aspects," said Zavaglia.

"I believe within the next week everything will be resolved."

Rafael Benítez, Hodgson's predecessor, signed Aquilani for a reported fee of £20m from Roma in 2009.

These old development/emissions cars from ford were donated for some extraction practice. I was lucky to arrive arrive while one of the fire department shifts was tearing into the Flex. I launched some parts for the D471 Flex in the steering wheel assembly. Thanks to the Westland Fire Department for letting me hang out for this!

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's possible shortlist of Carlo Ancelotti replacements following sacking of Italian

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's possible shortlist of Carlo Ancelotti replacements following sacking of Italian

After winning the Double - the club's first - in his first season Carlo Ancelotti failed to supply Roman Abramovich with any silverware in his second term. After the Italian was sacked, Telegraph Sport looks at seven possible replacements.

By Telegraph staff and agencies 8:29PM BST 22 May 2011

Comments

Guus Hiddink
The hugely successful and experienced Dutchman is reportedly owner Roman Abramovich's number one choice but is said not to want a return to frontline club management. Hiddink rescued Chelsea's season when he joined on a caretaker basis two years ago as he won the FA Cup and was desperately unlucky not to reach the Champions League final. His availability could depend on the outcome of Turkey's crucial European Championship qualifier in Belgium on June 3, although he may favour a sporting director role.

Andre Villas-Boas
Hiddink agreeing to move upstairs would open the door for an up-and-coming manager and Villas-Boas is currently the hottest young coach around. Dubbed the new 'Special One' after breaking several records set by Jose Mourinho at Porto, the 33-year-old knows Stamford Bridge well having worked as a scout under his fellow Portuguese. He would be a gamble but he wrapped up the Portuguese championship with five games to spare and last week added the Europa League title in Dublin before making it three trophies for the season with victory in the Portuguese Cup final on Sunday.

Marco van Basten
The former Holland manager has become a leading candidate following suggestions Hiddink recommended him to Abramovich as an alternative to himself. Despite being one of the greatest strikers of all time, Van Basten's managerial CV is not one that would usually interest Chelsea. His two major tournaments in charge of Holland ended with defeats in the first knockout rounds, while his one year at Ajax saw them fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Harry Redknapp
Redknapp is reportedly admired by Abramovich for transforming the fortunes of Tottenham using a brand of football the Russian has been yearning to see since buying Chelsea eight years ago. Redknapp has brushed off rumours linking him with the job but the former Portsmouth boss is a master of obfuscation and showed by taking charge of Southampton that he is not averse to a controversial move, especially one which would provide him with the spending power Spurs lack. But he may decide to hold out for the England job.

Mark Hughes
Hughes will be able to sympathise with Ancelotti, having been cruelly sacked by Manchester City a year and a half ago, despite being on course to meet the requirement set by his bosses. He appears to be by far the best manager of all Sir Alex Ferguson's former players, having transformed the fortunes of Wales and Blackburn and building on Roy Hodgson's work at Fulham. Despite being "happy" at Craven Cottage, he has previously said he wants to manage another big club and remains popular at Chelsea from his spell there as a player.

Pep Guardiola
Even more than Redknapp, Guardiola plays the fantasy football Abramovich craves. But would he want to leave Barcelona when he has a number of the best players in the world at his disposal? Also, Barca's philosophy has taken several years to develop, while Chelsea have been playing a game almost at the other end of the spectrum since Mourinho's appointment. Frank Rijkaard proved leaving the Nou Camp and working with less technically gifted players can be more difficult than it might seem.

Avram Grant
After guiding Portsmouth and West Ham to relegation in successive seasons, you would think Grant would be the last person Chelsea would turn to. But the Israeli reportedly retains the ear of Abramovich from his spell in charge, which saw him become the only man to lead the club to a Champions League final. Although far more likely to be a candidate for sporting director, it could be he is appointed manager for a season if Abramovich decides to wait for a more suitable candidate to become available, such as Villas-Boas or Guardiola - or perhaps even Mourinho.

Undo Skin Damage: 6 Things To Do After Getting a Sunburn

You can actually undo some of the potential damage. Use this step-by-step rescue plan.

By Hallie Levine Sklar

Take Aspirin or Ibuprofen These meds work by reducing inflammation, which means they ease the irritation and redness that are your body's first responses to a serious burn. The catch is, you have to take them within 24 hours of getting fried. Otherwise, the redness can cause permanent damage, says Ellen Marmur, MD, chief of dermatologic surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, in New York City.

Related: Scary Truths Tanning Salons Deny

Moisturize Like Crazy Lotion infused with an anti-inflammatory agent like aloe vera or soy will decrease the dryness and flakiness you'll likely experience as the redness from your bad burn turns into peeling, itchy skin, says Dr. Marmur. Slather it on as often as possible; you can't go overboard, and it'll feel cool and soothing.
Use Sunscreen Religiously Blocking UV light exposure gives skin time to heal and your immune system a chance to repair some of the damage, says David J. Leffell, MD, professor of dermatology and surgery at Yale School of Medicine. In fact, research suggests that zealously using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 can keep precancerous cell changes you've already racked up from progressing.

Related: One Woman's Horrifying Story: Death By Suntan at Age 26

Exfoliate the Area Once your burned skin has completely healed, exfoliate the affected area with an over-the-counter alpha hydroxy acid cleanser twice a week for a month. This will stimulate the growth of new, healthy skin cells and also eradicate the dead ones that are making your skin tone look blotchy and uneven.

Apply a Retinol Cream Sun destroys your skin's collagen, the substance that gives it elasticity. Retinol (a vitamin A derivative) can up production of new collagen, says NYC dermatologist Doris Day. After the burn has healed, an over-the-counter retinol cream should work, but if you have rougher skin, ask for an Rx like Renova.

Get Lasered If you have chronic sun damage, consider laser or intense pulse light treatments in your derm's office. Both penetrate your skin, erasing discoloration, wrinkles, and blotchiness. The downside is that you may need several treatments, and they're expensive: Three can run at least $1,500.

Great Leighs racecourse could be up and running again in 2013

Great Leighs racecourse could be up and running again in 2013

Racing at Great Leighs, the Essex all-weather track which was open for under a year before going into administration in January 2009, may have come a step closer on Monday after racehorses galloped on the eight and a half furlong Polytrack course for the first time since its licence was revoked over two years ago.

Great hopes: Great Leighs racecourse in Essex proved popular with Newmarket trainers before it went into administration Photo: JONATHAN LODGE

By Marcus Armytage 11:00PM BST 16 May 2011

Comments

The track, built by entrepreneur John Holmes, is now owned by West Register, a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland while the actual artificial surface itself is owned by Martin Collins, the Polytrack specialist who laid the original surface but was never paid for it.

A deal to rescue the property by local businessman Terry Chambers and racehorse owner Bill Gredley fell at the final hurdle in September 2009 and as recently as March the Eddie Stobart chief executive Andrew Tinkler, an emerging force in racing, had his name put into the mix after dropping in to visit the site in his helicopter.

The course was a popular venue with trainers 50 miles away in Newmarket who otherwise have to travel twice as far to get to the next closest all-weather venues at Southwell and Kempton.

The horses which worked there came from the yards of Phil McEntee, Chris Wall and Stuart Williams, while Luca Cumani was present as a spectator. After the work out, Wall gave it the thumbs up. He said: “The surface seems fine, they have no worries on that score. It rode as well as it ever did. It hasn’t broken down at all and all the horses strode out well on it.”

Even if Great Leighs is sold it will be a minimum 18 months before it could expect to be up and running again as a racecourse as it has missed the boat for the 2012 fixture allocation.

In a statement yesterday the BHA said: “No one holds a licence for Great Leighs and no formal application has been made. The deadline for any new racecourse wishing to participate in the 2012 fixture allocation expired on January 31st. The Authority received no application by that date. Therefore there will be no fixtures allocated to Great Leighs, or any other new racecourse, in 2012 fixture list.”

Spring Rush at the Subway

Spring Rush at the Subway

Hiking the Subway in Zion National Park is no easy task, especially during this spring when the waters rose to twice their usual spring level. There are two approaches to this hike - the top-down and bottom hikes. We are not rock climbers and thus chose the bottom way, which is listed at 3.5 miles each way, but it is at least 10 miles roundtrip I am sure due to the constant ascent and descent of boulders surrounding the flowing water. The quickly flowing waters had to be crossed multiple times on top of wet, slick boulders. Upon reaching the Subway I experienced two thoughts. One, how amazing it is to enter this structure that has been carved by the tributary of the Virgin River for centuries. And what a way to enter - with the water running over your feet, cascading from little waterfalls! Two, how do we get back in time before it is completely dark?! No wonder that the week we had navigated the Left Fork trail, at least two groups of hikers were lost, one for as long as 4 days, and necessitated rescue efforts.

The tripod legs were in a good 6 inches of fast current. The green pools were obscured and only brought out with this 20 second exposure!

Wolverhampton Wanderers look to manager Mick McCarthy for inspiration following defeat of Sunderland

Wolverhampton Wanderers look to manager Mick McCarthy for inspiration following defeat of Sunderland

Mick McCarthy plays the role of curmudgeonly Yorkshireman to perfection in public but, according to his most senior player, behind the scenes of Wolves’ continuing fight against relegation he is the dressing-room cheerleader.

“Maybe he can come across as grumpy, but not to us,” veteran defender Jody Craddock said after this vital away win. “It is his job all week to try and keep us upbeat and make sure that we do the right things in training. Everyone who knows Mick, knows he’s so honest.

“He’s straight down the line and tells you exactly what he thinks. Do we need to pick him up? No, the gaffer is the person we look to when we are down in the dumps. When we’ve lost again, we’ve looked at him to try and get us out of it.”

The 35 year-old added: “His mood can rub off on us. He, along with [No 2] Terry Connor, do their jobs as we cannot pick ourselves up all the time. We don’t just turn up on a Saturday and play the game. You have to do things right every single day.”

Craddock volleyed his first goal for 14 months to put Wolves ahead and although Stéphane Sessègnon struck an acrobatic equaliser for Sunderland, the visitors deservedly prevailed thanks to headed goals from Steven Fletcher and George Elokobi.

“Staying up would be the biggest achievement of my career,” Craddock, a former Sunderland player, said. “We have had some fantastic results, beating Manchester United and Chelsea, but it is just a tough, tough division to try and get results in. We are upping our game, but the difficulty is, so is everyone else.

“We have been down there all season. It is not a case of suddenly dropping down and beginning to panic. We have just kept a level head and managed to keep it going.”

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, meanwhile, is planning for life without Bolo Zenden after the Dutchman told him he would be quitting Wearside in the summer.

It was described as a lap of appreciation but it was more like a walk of shame around a near-deserted Emirates Stadium as Arsenal finished their home programme with another embarrassing defeat that could leave them having to qualify for the Champions League.

Arsenal conceded two goals in the opening 15 minutes to the rampant Darren Bent and could drop to fourth place on Tuesday night if Manchester City beat Stoke.

“It’s very disappointing,” Arsène Wenger admitted. “We were caught by a very bad start. We dropped three points that could cost us automatic qualification for the Champions League. It will be a big setback [if they have to qualify] but we will adapt our preparation to it.”

Of the 'lap of appreciation’ in front of as few as 15,000 patient fans, the Frenchman insisted: “It was not embarrassing, it was our job to thank the fans and you never have to be embarrassed when you do your job. It was not through glory but no matter what kind of result happened you have to respect your fans.”

Arsenal were missing key players, including captain Cesc Fabregas, who has been ruled out for three to four weeks with a thigh injury, meaning that he misses the final-day trip to Fulham and Spanish international action.

But even the inclusion of Fabregas may not have prevented this poor performance. The home supporters booed their team off at the interval and again at full-time and in between they responded to the controversial 6.5 per cent season-ticket price rise for next season by singing: “Six per cent, you’re having a laugh.”

And Villa were having a chuckle early on, taking an 11th-minute lead through Bent. When Stiliyan Petrov sent the ball high over the Arsenal defence Bent was unmarked. The England striker was played onside by Sébastien Squillaci but still had much to do as he chested the ball before volleying it into the top corner.

Four minutes later, James Collins’ low pass sent Ashley Young forward, and his ball past the returning Thomas Vermaelen handed Bent the chance to claim a second, which he took with a neat finish.

Arsenal responded and could have had a penalty when Aaron Ramsey was brought down by Richard Dunne, while Robin Van Persie hit the post.

At half-time Wenger replaced Squillaci, with Alex Song moving into defence and replacement Marouane Chamakh going into attack. But the change offered little improvement.

Chamakh did have the ball in the net but was harshly penalised for a push on Kyle Walker. A consolation goal arrived in the final minute, predictably from Van Persie, claiming his 20th goal in 22 games in 2011. Sadly, his team-mates have failed to maintain such consistency.

Steve James: former England international Craig Kieswetter returns as mature thinker after taming himself

Steve James: former England international Craig Kieswetter returns as mature thinker after taming himself

Craig Kieswetter is explaining his reasons for turning down the Indian Premier League both this year and last. In 2010, before he had played for England, a couple of franchises expressed interest in signing him outside of the auction; this year he was on the list until the day before the auction when, already “not quite comfortable” about it, a conversation with England team director Andy Flower made up his mind.

“I want to play international cricket,” says Kieswetter, “and I want to do the best I can for England. That has always been my goal. When I play for England I want to be the best ’keeper in England and then the best ’keeper in the world. It’s that simple. There is no hidden side to it, like the money. It is all about being the best that I can be.”

Just check the desire and ambition. Yes, such a decision regarding the IPL might be a little easier for someone like Kieswetter, who admits he is fortunate to come “from a fairly wealthy family” and many might blithely dismiss this as typical South African arrogance, but I like it. Kieswetter is honest, well-spoken and utterly engaging. Goodness, this kid really does want to play for England again. It is etched in his every utterance.

And it is my understanding that he will return as opener/wicketkeeper when the short-form stuff begins against Sri Lanka late next month. But first he must recover from a thigh injury which worsened during his century in Somerset’s facile CB40 victory over Gloucestershire last Sunday.

He has a Grade 2 tear. “And Grade 3 is a rupture” he cautions, “so we caught it at the right time.” Until this injury setback, Kieswetter had been not so much nudging the national selectors as clipping them around the ears this season. He has scored two centuries and a 95 not out in his four CB40 innings, as well as averaging 42 in the county championship with one hundred.

And it is not just weight of runs, because, in truth, some of the opposition bowling has been thoroughly mediocre. Kieswetter looks a better batsman. Last year’s frenzy at the crease, as manic as a teenager on a night out, has been replaced by a calmer judiciousness. Standing outside leg stump and scything merrily through the off-side worked in the ICC World Twenty20, but it was a method of madness in English conditions.

Kieswetter made 38 in the first one-day international against Australia last summer, but thereafter managed just 102 in nine international innings. His game was in bits, but as he rightly points out: “It’s quite hard to work on technical things when you’re in the middle of a series.” Indeed it is.

He ended the season feeling rather “bitter”. The higher you go, the harder the fall. Becoming at 22 England’s second youngest one-day centurion (after David Gower) in Bangladesh, and winning the man-of-the match gong in the triumphant World Twenty20 final, is pretty high.

Kieswetter needed rehabilitation and found it with the England Lions, and more specifically their batting coach Graham Thorpe. First in Australia and then in the West Indies, Kieswetter was afforded the necessary time for both technical and mental reappraisal. “Thorpey came at it from a different angle,” he says, “He was technical but there was a lot of mental work too, about constructing innings and being more mature and responsible at the crease. It’s shown. I now don’t feel as rushed and as frenetic as last year.”

He’s also covering his stumps. “I look back at that Australia series last summer,” he says, “and I wasn’t really moving my feet. I was staying leg-side and playing with my hands. My technique just wasn’t strong enough to cope when you’ve got Shaun Tait running in and bowling at 100mph. I probably could have coped with 80 per cent of their attack, but the key 20 per cent that I needed to survive as an opener, I wasn’t able to deal with.”

Kieswetter can reflect humbly on the experience now. “It was a blessing in disguise to be dropped,” he admits, “I thought I could manage it mentally, but I couldn’t. This winter I have matured as a person and as a cricketer. When you play for England and do well, people start throwing things at you. That life is fantastic, but I think I lost track of the reality of scoring runs and taking catches, of what my job really was.”

He has matured. I watched him make 95 not out against Glamorgan recently. At the other end Peter Trego smashed 100 off just 59 balls. It was instructive that Kieswetter was content to allow his partner centre stage. “Two years ago I would have tried to have a biff with him,” he admits, “It wouldn’t have been good for the team. But I don’t see myself anymore as that out-and-out brash, hard-hitting player. I see myself as being able to adapt my game to the situation. That was the problem against Australia last year. I didn’t adapt. I was playing a Twenty20 role in the 50-over format.”

A word of concern, though. Kieswetter mentioned that last year he allowed “the smaller things to bug him” during his slump. I sense those could easily resurface. He was a little irked to cop some flak for his wicketkeeping last Sunday, and rightly pointed out that he was carrying his leg injury. But his keeping does need some work. Strangely he is more proficient standing up than back at the moment. His natural athleticism will eventually ensure he is a fine ’keeper, but he must continue with the graft too and ignore the criticisms.

Also there is the subject of his South African upbringing (with a Scottish mother). “For five years I’ve answered those questions and I think there comes a time when I’d rather people write about my cricket,” he says with some justification.

I was actually more interested in his time at Millfield School. He was only there for a term and a half after passing his matric at Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town. But he played in a remarkable team at Millfield. Opening the batting was Kieran Powell, who has since played for the West Indies, at No 3 was Surrey’s Tom Maynard, Kieswetter was at four and Essex’s Adam Wheater at five. The captain was Somerset’s leg-spinner Max Waller and the opening bowler was Glamorgan’s Chris Ashling. Kieswetter never did finish his A-levels at Millfield, as Somerset swooped swiftly with a contract.

And now it seems England will swoop swiftly again. Neither Matt Prior nor Steve Davies has done enough. Kevin Pietersen will not be risked as opener in this country. There is no stand-out aggressive one-day opener in the shires. So Kieswetter is set to be reunited at the top of the order with new skipper Alastair Cook, a partnership first forged last year in Bangladesh. “On my debut in Dhaka it took me three overs to get on strike!” jokes Kieswetter, “But he [Cook] was very calm and good to bat with. I feel we can be compatible. I would just really like to be back playing for England.”

It shouldn’t be long now.
