The Countess Devonshire is staying at the Royal Hotel in London when she discovers her valuable diamond necklace has been stolen - much to the horror of the hotel manager, Mr. Golding.
Detective Thaddeus Gilmore and his friend Granville Polmere are attending an important court case in London and offer their services to recover the necklace.
However, the Countess's vague and somewhat confusing version of events results in the case becoming a complex and intriguing mystery for Thaddeus to solve.
