Missing two, Aeros shut down by Rivermen 3-0

PEORIA, Illinois — With their top two players on recall to the Minnesota Wild, the Aeros played shorthanded and took one on the chin Saturday night against the Peoria Rivermen.

Forward Robbie Earl and defenseman Marco Scandella were called up earlier this week, and the players picking up the slack for the Aeros did virtually nothing in a 3-0 shutout loss at Carver Arena.

Rivermen rookie goalie Jake Allen made 22 saves and improved to 2-0 against the Aeros this season.

Allen made eight saves in the third period, and he and the Rivermen shut down the Aeros on their four power- play chances.

The Aeros were outshot 24-22 and saw their six-game points streak come to an end against a Rivermen squad that had faltered lately after starting the year as one of the best teams in the AHL.

Unlike their last two losses on this five-game road trip, the Aeros did not blow a two-goal lead, as they lost for the third time overall after a modest four-game winning streak.

Goalie Anton Khudobin finished with 21 saves and kept the Aeros in the game until the third period, when the Rivermen increased their lead from one to three goals.

In his first game of the season, forward Matt McIlvane gave Peoria a 1-0 lead in the second period when he split two Aeros defenders and snapped a low shot by Khudobin at 9:24.

In the third period, Rivermen winger Derek Nesbitt made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season at 2:40. Then, just under four minutes later, T.J. Hensick rounded out the scoring when he beat Khudobin at 6:21.

The Aeros hit a few posts Saturday but saw their shutout streak against the Rivermen increase to 122 minutes, seven seconds.

Rivermen goalie Ben Bishop blanked the Aeros 1-0 with an overtime win at Toyota Center on Oct. 22.
