Weekend forecast: Big chill for East, snow near Great Lakes

FacebookBy Doyle Rice, USA TODAY

A cold but mostly calm weekend is forecast across the USA this weekend, with the main exception being near the Great Lakes, where some significant snowfall is possible.

Central snow: A small but potent snowstorm will roll across the western Great Lakes and into the Ohio Valley and Appalachians Saturday. The heaviest snow is likely in southern Minnesota and southern Wisconsin, where up to half a foot of snow is possible. The storm will spread light snow into Virginia and North Carolina overnight and into Sunday morning.

Lake-effect mess: The combination of cold air over the relatively warmer waters of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario will produce lake-effect snow in the typical Snow Belt regions of western New York state, primarily on Sunday. Several inches are likely from Buffalo to Syracuse.

Soggy West: Light rain showers will fall Saturday and Sunday along coastal sections of Oregon and California, while the Intermountain West and northern Rockies will see light snow showers both days. Light rain could reach as far south as Los Angeles on Sunday. The rain and snow aren't forecast to cause significant travel problems.

Chilly East: After a slight moderation in temperatures Saturday in the South, almost the entire eastern two-thirds of the country will have a colder-than-average Sunday, with high temperatures only in the 40s as far south as Georgia. Only far southern Texas and South Florida will remain mild Sunday, with highs in the 70s.

The chill will continue to intensify into next week, with temperatures well below their typical December averages.
