MLB: Giants OK Cain deal for $127.5M

Matt Cain and the Giants agreed to a $127.5 million, six-year contract, the largest deal for a right-handed pitcher in baseball history. Among pitchers, only the Yankees’ CC Sabathia ($161 million) and the Mets’ Johan Santana ($137.5 million) have larger contracts.

First baseman Joey Votto and the Reds agreed on the framework to a 10-year, $225 million extension, ESPN.com. reported.

Cleveland pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez was suspended for five games and fined by MLB for intentionally throwing at Colorado’s Troy Tulowitzki Sunday during a spring-training game.

Boston’s Josh Beckett went to Texas to have his injured thumb examined. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said he expected the right-hander to make his scheduled start at Detroit this weekend.

College: Petrino in motorcycle crash

Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino was hospitalized with broken ribs after crashing his motorcycle Sunday in northern Arkansas. His family said he was in “stable condition.’’

Jim Baron, fired last month at Rhode Island, was hired as Canisius’ basketball coach ... Central Michigan hired Keno Davis, formerly of Providence, as its basketball coach. . . Ohio will introduce Jim Christian today as its new coach, replacing John Groce, who was hired last week at Illinois.

Etc.: Flyers coach fined 10G

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette was fined $10,000 after calling out counterpart Dan Bylsma for sending out his checking line late in Philadelphia’s 6-4 win Sunday at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Wizards rookie Chris Singleton said he bought $10,000 worth of tickets for last week’s Mega Millions lottery, adding it was “either that or blowing it in the clubs.”
